7 Ways to Celebrate Mothers Day in the Bay Area

by Mommy Neartest

Moms, your special day is coming up on May 12, and while you might want to run to the nearest spa for some much-needed R&R, you know there's no better gift than spending quality time with your kiddos. That's why we rounded up seven Bay Area activities—think, brunch, crafts, and museum exploring—that your kids (and more importantly, you!) will love to do on Mother's Day weekend this year.

1. For a bonding activity:

Spend some much-needed time at the Botanical Garden's interactive workshop on May 11, where you'll make floral crowns alongside the garden's educational staff. All the supplies will be provided, just bring along little green thumbs! Choose to visit for the 10:30 am or the 1:00 pm session. Cost: Included in garden admission—adults $12, children over six $7, children six and under free.

2. For a hands-on craft:

The SF Botanical Garden is offering a one-of-a-kind craft that moms can wear on their special day. On May 11 and May 18, choose from an assortment of flowers and plants to create your very own Haku lei to sport with your little ones. Way cooler than an ordinary flower crown if you ask us.

Cost: $60.

3. For educational fun:

The Academy's mission is to regenerate the natural world through science, learning, and collaboration. Every visit supports scientific research, environmental education, and sustainability innovation around the world. Cost: Adults: $43.00, Childern $32.00

4. For a traditional brunch:

Nibble on tasty brunch food and enjoy a scenic ride through the redwoods or down to the beaches of Santa Cruz on May 12. First, indulge in brunch in Bret Harte Hall accompanied with a live musical performance, then hop on the train for a relaxing ride. Kids can also work on something special for moms at the event's craft station.

Cost: Adults $69, children $50 (includes train ride and brunch).

5. For some exercise:

Ride your way through the zoo's animal encounters at the Mother's Day BikeAbout on May 12—a 90-minute bike tour focusing on what maternal care looks like throughout the zoo. After you are done peddling, satisfy those hungry bellies with a continental breakfast!

Cost: $45 per bike rider (free for children piggy-backing on a parent's bike).

6. For a freebie:

To honor all visiting mamas, the Oakland Zoo is offering a free train ride on Mother's Day. While you're enjoying the zoo, your family can also see the resident animal moms enjoy tasty (and well-deserved) treats during their regular feedings.

Cost: Included in general admission—adults $24, children (ages 2-14) $20, children under 2 free; moms receive one free train ride.

7. For something out of the ordinary:

Winchester Mystery House 525 S Winchester Blvd San Jose, CA

Treat yourself to brunch (and bottomless mimosas!) before taking a tour of the one-of-a-kind Winchester Mystery House with your kiddos. The tour lasts a little over an hour and will delight little ones with plenty of spooky stories. (Don't worry, all kid-friendly!)

Cost: Adults $99, children (ages 4-12) $19, children 3 and under free.

Our Team Wishes every Mother out there a wonderful Mother's Day!
